2019 Trip

Our fifth grade overnight trip to Riley's Farm is scheduled for April 17-.18

Riley's Farm Field Trip Information

The fifth grade at Wood Ranch will be attending an overnight field trip at Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.

A typical journey begins in the evening at 5:00 PM when guests are assigned a cot in their sleeping quarters, take part in an orientation meeting and are then divided into groups called “townships.”  Students then undergo martial training as well as a few additional activities not usually featured on our day trips. After enjoying a full meal accompanied by live 18th century music in our Hawkshead Public House, guests will be paid an inspirational visit by the legendary Patrick Henry, while rounding out the evening with apple crisp! Cabins and marquis tents will typically house weary guests as they slumber soundly in preparation for a very full day!

At dawn, overnighters explore some of the farm’s vast 760 acres by reconnoitering the top of a local hill and standing watch for the British army. After skirmishing with the redcoats, guests will return to the tavern to enjoy a farm breakfast of eggs, bacon, french toast casserole and orange juice. By the time breakfast is over, games and last minute preparation will be a welcome respite before the day’s Revolutionary War Adventure!

This field trip will take place on Wednesday, April 17 and Thursday, April 18. We will depart school in private vehicles around 1:30 on Wednesday and return around 4:00 or 5:00 on Thursday. We are in need of chaperones who can drive students to and from Oak Glen, and non-driving chaperones are welcome too! The cost of this adventure, including 3 meals, is $150 per person (about $5 per week!). In September, we will be collecting a $20 non-refundable deposit for all students and adults who are interested in attending. The balance will be due prior to Spring Break. Note to potential chaperones: In addition to your field trip cost, you are required by the school district to get a LiveScan fingerprinting at a district specified location and background check done. Chaperones will need to pay the $150 for the Riley’s Farm trip along with the additional fees for LiveScan and TB. Total chaperone cost will be approximately $210.

In order to get a rough estimate of the number of people joining us, please register your child online and return the parent letter and your deposit (checks made out to Wood Ranch Elementary) to your child’s teacher no later than September 21. If you have any questions, feel free to speak to your child’s teacher.

If you are unable to pay for this field trip, a limited number of scholarships will be available. Please contact Ms. Taylor (Jeannine.taylor@simivalleyusd.org) if you are in need of or would like to fund a scholarship.
