Ch. 1-6

 

  1. Contrary- opposite

  2. Devoured- to eat up greedily

  3. Doublet- a close fitting jacket worn by Europeans between the 15th and 17th centuries

  4. Grimace- a facial expression of contempt, pain, or disgust

  5. Livid- extremely angry; furious

  6. Magistrate- a civil officer with power to administer and enforce law

  7. Tromp- to walk heavily and noisily

  8. Venture-  an undertaking that is dangerous and daring




 

Ch. 7-12

  1. Agony- great physical pain or mental anguish

  2. Appreciate- to recognize the quality and significance of something

  3. Navigate- to plan, record, and control the course and position

  4. Provisions- a stock of necessary supplies, especially food

  5. Repent- to feel regret and remorse

  6. Scoffs- to mock

  7. Tormenting- a source of harassment, annoyance or pain

  8. Yelp- utter a sharp cry





 

Ch.13-19

  1. Abrupt- unexpectedly, sudden

  2. Apprentice- one bond by legal agreement to work for another for a specific time in return for instruction in trade, art, or business

  3. Clapboard- a long narrow board with one edge thicker than the other

  4. Conquer- to defeat or subdue

  5. Negotiate- to confer with others to reach an agreement

  6. Rations- a fixed portion, an allotted amount for people such as food

  7. Retreat- to act or process of withdrawing

  8. Rummaging- to search thoroughly by handling, turning over, or disarranging the contents

 

Ch.20-27

 

  1. Barges- a flat bottomed boat for carrying freight; canals and rivers

  2. Cicadas- a large insect with long transparent wings, mainly in warm countries

  3. Coronation- the ceremony of crowning a king, queen, or other sovereign

  4. Impish- inclined to do slightly naughty things for fun; mischievous

  5. Imposing- grand and impressive in appearance

  6. Laden- heavily loaded or weighed down

  7. Sassafras- a deciduous N.American tree with aromatic leaves and bark

  8. Woo- try to gain the love of someone; especially with a view to marry
